Low Vision

Helping You Make the Most of Your Remaining Vision

Living with reduced vision can affect far more than just what you see — it can impact your independence, confidence, and quality of life. At the Institute of Eye Surgery, our dedicated Low Vision Clinic focuses on helping you adapt, regain confidence, and continue doing the things that matter most to you.

Low vision does not mean the end of independence. With the right assessment, guidance, and tools, many people are able to read more comfortably, move with greater confidence, and remain active in daily life.

What Is Low Vision?

Low vision refers to permanent vision loss that cannot be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery, but where useful vision still remains.

It may be caused by conditions such as:

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Retinal conditions
  • Neurological or congenital visual impairment

While vision may be reduced, supportive care and visual aids can make a meaningful difference.

Our Low Vision Assessments

Every Low Vision Assessment at IOES is personalised and consultant-led. We take time to understand how vision loss affects your daily life — not just what shows up on an eye chart.

During your assessment, we focus on:

  • Reading and close-up tasks
  • Hobbies and everyday activities
  • Mobility and spatial awareness
  • Lighting challenges and contrast sensitivity
  • Confidence and independence

This allows us to recommend practical, realistic solutions tailored to your needs.

Low Vision Aids & Solutions

We offer guidance on a wide range of modern low vision aids, including:

  • Enhanced reading glasses and lenses
  • Optical magnifiers
  • Digital and electronic magnification devices
  • Handheld and wearable visual aids
  • Monocular devices for distance viewing

Our goal is not to overwhelm you with technology — but to identify what genuinely helps, and ensure you feel confident using it.

A Supportive, Patient-Centred Approach

At IOES, low vision care is about more than devices. It’s about support, understanding, and reassurance.

We work alongside you — and, when appropriate, your family or carers — to ensure recommendations are practical, manageable, and aligned with your lifestyle.

You’ll never feel rushed, pressured, or dismissed.

Who Can Benefit from a Low Vision Assessment?

A Low Vision Assessment may be helpful if you:

  • Struggle with reading despite updated prescriptions
  • Find everyday tasks more difficult due to reduced vision
  • Feel your confidence or independence has been affected
  • Have been told “nothing more can be done” — but still want support

Even small improvements can make a meaningful difference.
